With 46 cars booked in, and plenty of new cars and paint jobs on show, the results during the night will shed light on who has the best shale car set-up straight out of the box. At last year’s King’s Lynn opener it was Frankie Wainman Jnr who put down a marker that he was going to be the man to beat during the season with an emphatic heat and final victory, and a third place from the one-lap handicap in the Grand National. Nigel Green, winner of the final last weekend at Belle Vue and second in the National Points Shootout at the end of last year, followed him home in both heat and final 12 months ago. European Champion Dan Johnson and “Mr Box Office” Mick Sworder make their season debuts tomorrow, although Sworder took part in the destructive final meeting at Wimbledon earlier in the month. Two of the heroes from the British Lions team who finished runner-up in the NZ Teams Championships last month, Ben Hurdman and Bobby Griffin, are also in the line-up. Much of the focus, however, will be on former World Champion Tom Harris, who drives last year’s National Points Shootout Championship-winning shale and Tarmac cars for Jamie Davidson. Harris, who won the World Final at King’s Lynn in 2013, began the year in dramatic style competing against the best Midget racers in the United States at the Chilli Bowl Midget Nationals in Tulsa in January. The 28-year-old gained the respect of his fellow competitors by qualifying his Midget for the ‘B’ Final on Finals night. A flat tyre halted the potential prospect of an ‘A’ Final slot. The Banbury star has a daunting schedule in front of him. As well as clashing bumpers and nerf rails with his main rivals throughout the season in BriSCA F1, he is also planning a full-on campaign in the States, including competing in a number of USAC events as well as a full season in BriSCA F1 both here and in Holland. “At the moment, we’ve got 85 meetings we’re doing!” says Harris. “The first few weeks of the season is just about getting everything organised because after that it is going to be a very busy time for me. “I will be flying to America on Sundays, racing Monday through to Thursday and flying back Friday and racing BriSCA F1 on the Saturday…” In the meantime, Harris has spent the close season building stock cars and preparing the Davidson machines – raced successfully by Rob Speak for the past three years – for the new season. The shale car has been completely stripped back down to a bare chassis and rebuilt from the ground up. Harris worked alongside car builder Stephen ‘Cecil’ Sayers to get the car ready for King’s Lynn. The finishing touches were added while Sayers was away on holiday in America for a couple of weeks. “We’ve totally revamped it,” says Harris. “We’ve put different suspension on it, a fresh engine and we’re all geared up ready to go. It’s been stripped down to absolutely nothing. New axles – basically there are more new bits than old bits. The rear suspension is radically different. “Cecil has got his own ideas and it has his input. We’ve worked together on the car but he has done all the work to be fair. He’s been away in America for the past couple of weeks but now the crew chief is back!” As for this season he sees the same names featuring for the big races. “It should be the usual suspects really,” says Harris. “Frank, Nigel Green, Dan Johnson, Lee Fairhurst, Mick Sworder. Stuart Smith Jnr didn’t make the Shootout last year so he will be gunning for it. He is obviously keen having done Belle Vue last week. “Of the younger guys, I think Bradley Harrison could be a front-runner. He’s driving his dad’s Tarmac car this year, so if he does the meetings and puts the effort in, he’s got the equipment now to run at the top. “Ben Riley is coming on. He’s got good equipment now. He’s got the best you can get both on shale and Tarmac! They’ve got the finance to carry it on through the year.” As for targets during the season Harris has the big events firmly in his sights. “Obviously Jamie has been kind enough to ask me to race in Speaky’s stuff this year,” he says. “So I’m going to do my absolute best for the team. Whenever I go out on the track I race to win.”

Wonder if it's more likely that this is a qualification thing - maybe from last year - and that there will be 'unqualified' whites and yellows in heat 2 (such as the Dutch drivers, for example)? I would think so - it's the 2016 W&Y Series Final (can't remember why it wasn't run at the end of last year) and there's a few whites/yellows that can't have qualified cos they didn't race there last year, e.g. 271, 532, 364, and the Dutch lads.

I think Wayne might be a "maybe" - he still has a bit of work to do....

World Champion 1 Frankie Wainman heads the entry with a whole host of other top stars also set to be amongst the action including "Mr Box Office" - the always entertaining 150 Mick Sworder, 4 Dan Johnson, 16 Matt Newson, 84 Tom Harris and 259 Paul Hines. A good field of lower grade drivers will also be in action and the meeting includes the annual White & Yellow Final which was won last year by 244 Mick Rogers and has a prize fund exceeding £1000. As well as the F1 Stock Cars racing also comes from the F2 Stock Cars and with King's Lynn recently being confirmed as the 2017 World Final venue there is no shortage of drivers looking to try their hand on the Norfolk shale with over 70 cars booked in. World Champion H124 Wim Petters will be making his first appearance in the UK since last year and National Points Champion 7 Gordon Moodie will be continuing his assault on the nation's shale raceways and will be buoyed after winning the final at Belle Vue last Sunday. Once again a large entry of cars will be making the trip across from Mainland Europe which always adds a lot to the meeting. 225 Tony Blackburn was the winner of the final at Lynn three weeks ago but 871 Mark Simpson will count himself unlucky after picking up a flat tyre when looking a certainty for success and 606 Andrew Palmer will be looking to continue his astonishing high win rate at the Adrian Flux Arena. The opener at King's Lynn last year had 45 cars, the year before it was 39. There's currently 43 booked for Saturday, which is pretty much par for the course. Correct Colin, the highest non Coventry turnout last year was 56 cars at Birmingham on 16th April.

Meeting preview from Trackstar: BriSCA Formula One stock cars make their first King’s Lynn appearance of 2017 on Saturday night (25 March, 5:30pm). The Big League will be joined by another huge entry of BriSCA Formula Two stock cars, providing a BriSCA fan’s dream with bumperwork in every race. There are currently 43 BriSCA F1 Stock Cars and 75 BriSCA F2 Stock Cars booked in to race. Any driver who is not listed below may not be allowed to race if they turn up. If they are allowed to race they will not receive any complimentary admissions. Drivers please note that the pits open at 2pm and your early arrival will be appreciated. Drivers turning up in the last hour could well find themselves missing their first race. A turnout plenty large enough for a full-format meeting is expected, with most of the sport’s big names in attendance. Leading the entry is world champion #1 Frankie Wainman Jr who also topped the King’s Lynn track points last season. He began 2016 with two dominant displays in his new car at the Adrian Flux Arena that signalled him out as the man to beat. Will he be able to continue that kind of form in 2017? The one shale meeting to have taken place so far this year was at Belle Vue last weekend and was won by Leicestershire’s 445 Nigel Green for whom 2016 was a breakthrough year. Now established among the superstars, he will be aiming to lift his first major title this year. ‘Mr Box Office’, 150 Mick Sworder has been one of the most successful drivers at King’s Lynn in recent years and is certain to be in the hunt for race wins again – all while entertaining the crowd with his flamboyant style. Local boy 16 Mat Newson ended what had been a slightly disappointing 2016 with a final win at our last meeting and will be hoping he can produce more of the same this year. Only three men have won more finals at the track than Newson, one of them being 55 Craig Finnikin. The shale expert has had an up-and-down couple of years and will be looking to return to his best. Multi-champion 84 Tom Harris and 4 Dan Johnson have also had plenty of success at King’s Lynn and aren’t afraid to get stuck with some hard hits. They, as always, will be ones to watch. There are also returns for father-and-son duo 91 Tony and 191 Josh Smith, and twice Formula Two world champion 532 Daz Kitson, while travelling interest is provided by Dutch trio of 54 Sierd de Vries, H112 Arjan Ligthart and H295 Willem Zwerver. The meeting will kick off with the 2016 White & Yellow Grade Series final, won last by 244 Mick Rogers who is set to start from the second row of yellow tops for this edition, behind Cambridgeshire driver 415 Russell Cooper, 192 Luke Dennis, and the local favourite 326 Mark Sargent. Veteran racer 280 Colin Nairn will start from the front of the white grade, from where he may spring a surprise if he can make a break and drive a tidy race.
