  1. A picture of the Albion Claymore brings back memories. AW Smith, Kitty’s Farm is next to where I grew up and as an eleven year old I learned to drive in their fields collecting bales of hay in an ex army Bedford OY truck. Geoff Yates, the owner of Longton Coachcraft is married to the granddaughter of AW Smith which explains his sign writing choice. Please keep doing your informative articles Roy.
  2. Hi Rod, I ordered the car off Frankie sir on 6 Jan 1987 and took him a Huddart rebuilt 454 to fit in it. Frankie supplied everything else. Collected it 7 weeks later and sponsor Bill Bullock painted it and Brian Evans did the sign writing. Used it for 3 seasons before selling it to Nigel Dawson 56. It was probably my most successful car. For some reason Nigel took it to Silsden and some years later Frankie told me he had cut it up.
  3. What an awesome track, the film brings back lots of good memories, Confused at first when it showed two heat ones. After a bit of detective work I found that the first one won by Bert was an extra race before the heats sponsored by the wound up Pendle Valley supporters club as a method of distributing their remaining money. I didn’t remember Peter Falding helped me in the Final but next time I see him he would probably appreciate a pint or three from me. Seeing the shafts of sunlight on the film reminds me l always drove down the back straight one handed using my left hand as a sun visor.
  4. Excellent article about Wigan. You might have prompted us to have a canal walk and lunch in a canal side pub. Your previous article about Copley Mill near Halifax missed mentioning the most famous business in Copley. It is owned by a young bloke who sells motorhomes!!

That picture of Keith’s car is a much later version of Hell Drivers.It might even be a picture of his MGB based F1.When MPP started Hell Drivers in April 1970 the cars used came straight out of the scrapyard with no armouring allowed, advertised as the original stock cars harking back to the early days.In the beginning our cars(John Park ex F1 157 and mine) only lasted for one meeting.As the season progressed we made them last a bit longer but still without armour. Eventually the cars became armoured up just like 1954 onwards so in the mid 70’s Mike Parker introduced Wreckers(a back to basics Hell Drivers car).I have lots of pictures but need to learn how to post them.
  9. I raced at the meeting,1972.My last ever Hell Drivers event before concentrating on F1. Received £1 start money and £5 for winning the destruction derby.
